January-October 2024 coal shipments on Russian Railways down 6.2% year-on-year


According to the news reported by the press service of Russian Railways (RZD), the operational data of Russian Railways show that in January-October 2024, the cumulative cargo loadings on the RZD railroad network amounted to 986.6 million tons, down 4.2% compared to the same period last year.

Among them, the volume of cargo loaded on Russian railroads in the month of October was 96.9 million tons, down 6.2% from the same period last year.

 

In the first 10 months, Russian railroads shipped 273.4 million tons of coal, down 6.2% from the same period in 2023. At the same time, 9.9 million tons of coke were shipped (up 3.5% year-on-year); 172.5 million tons of oil and petroleum products (-0.8%); 90.7 million tons of iron and manganese ores (-2.6%); 51.1 million tons of ferrous metals (-10.2%); 9.5 million tons of ferrous metal scrap (-18.6%); 55.9 million tons of fertilizers and mineral fertilizers (+6.1%); cement 20.5 million tons (-3.8%); timber cargo 22.2 million tons (-1.5%); grain 25.8 million tons (-2.1); construction cargo 96.4 million tons (-13.9%); non-ferrous ores and sulphur raw materials 13.7 million tons (-8.4%); chemicals and soda ash 17.5 million tons (-3%); and industrial raw materials and molding materials 27.7 million tons (+3.4%) ; other cargoes include 99.7 million tons of containers (+1%).

 

In January-October, the cumulative volume of freight turnover on Russian railroads was 208.7 billion ton-kilometers, down 5.6% over the same period last year; taking into account empty train miles, freight turnover was 257.67 billion ton-kilometers, down 6.1% year-on-year.

In October, Russia's rail freight turnover was 20.7 billion ton-kilometers, down 8.6% over the same period last year; taking into account the same period of empty train miles, freight turnover was 251.2 billion ton-kilometers, down 9% year-on-year.

Far Eastern railroad coal traffic up 5.2% in first 10 months

In January-October 2024, freight traffic on Russia's Far Eastern Railway (FER) amounted to 63.2 million tons, up 2.4% compared to the same period last year. In October, the Far Eastern Railway shipped 6.6 million tons of cargo, up 3% year-on-year.

 

 

 

In the first 10 months, the Far Eastern Railway loaded 30.2 million tons of coal, an increase of 5.2% compared to the same period of the previous year, 7.1 million tons of oil and petroleum products (-1.6%), 2.7 million tons of building materials (-10.1%), 2.4 million tons of iron and manganese ore (+2.9%), 2.2 million tons of timber (-1.5%), 2.1 million tons of containerized cargo (+12.2%), 1.2 million tons of cement (+2.2 %), 744,700 tons of ferrous metals (-2.6 %), and 458,000 tons of industrial raw and formed materials (-4 %).

According to recent information released by IAA PortNews and the IPEM Institute, the cargo throughput of Russian seaports has continued to decline this year, with a 1% decrease in throughput in the third quarter of 2024 compared to the same period last year, marking the fourth consecutive quarter of year-on-year decline.


China's rapeseed imports hit record high in October

Nov. 24: China imported 843,046 tons of rapeseed in October, up from 806,870 tons in September and from 34,439 metric tons in October last year, a record high, customs data showed.


In the first 11 months, coal transportation volume on the Russian Far East railway increased by 4.8%.

According to the Far East Railway Telegram channel, from January to November 2024, the cargo shipment volume of the Far East Railway (FER) reached nearly 70 million tons, an increase of 2.6% compared to the same period last year.
