Coal transshipments at Russian seaports down 11.5% year-on-year in January-October 2024

According to information released by the Press Center of the Russian Association of Commercial Seaports on November 12, the cumulative cargo throughput at Russian seaports in January-October 2024 was 743 million tons, down 3.2% from the same period last year. Among them, export cargo throughput was 586.6 million tons, down 2.8% year-on-year; 35.2 million tons of imported cargo, up 9% year-on-year; transit cargo transshipment was 54.8 million tons, flat compared to the same period of the previous year; and domestic coastal cargo transshipment was 66.5 million tons, down 13.1% year-on-year.
In the first 10 months, the transshipment volume of solid dry bulk cargoes in ports across Russia was 370.8 million tons, down 3.5% from the same period last year. Among them: transshipment of coal was 159.1 million tons, down 11.5% year-on-year. Also transshipped were 64.2 million tons of grain (+4.1% year-on-year), 45.5 million tons of containerized cargo (+9.9%), 15.6 million tons of ferrous metals (-14.5%), 9.6 million tons of ores (+16.4%), and 6.8 million tons of ferry cargo (-0.2%).
In the first 10 months, the volume of cargo transshipment at seaports in the Arctic Sea Basin was 77.4 million tons, down 5.5% year-on-year. Of this total, 22.3 million tons (-14.8%) were dry cargo transshipments and 55.1 million tons (-1.1%) were liquid cargo transshipments.
Among the ports of the Baltic Sea, the cargo turnover of the port of Ust-Luga amounted to 113.3 million tons (-0.6%), the port of Primorsk - 51.6 million tons (-2%), the Grand Port of St. Petersburg - 43.8 million tons (+8.8%), the port of Vysotsk - 10.1 million tons (-8.3%).
The cargo turnover of the seaports of the Azov-Black Sea basin amounted to 233 million tons (-7.3%), of which 111.1 million tons of dry cargoes (-9.6%) and 129.9 million tons of liquid cargoes (-5.2%) were transshipped.
The volume of cargo transhipment in the ports of the Caspian Basin was 6.9 million tons, an increase of 5.4 per cent year-on-year. Of this, 4.9 million tons (+14.9%) were dry cargo transshipments and 2.2 million tons (-10.6%) were liquid cargo transshipments. Among the main seaports, cargo transhipment at the port of Astrakhan amounted to 3.3 million tons (+4.2%), and cargo turnover at the port of Makhachkala was 2.7 million tons (-8.1%).
The volume of cargo transshipment at the seaports of the Far Eastern Basin amounted to 197.1 million tons, which is 1.9% less than the same period of the previous year. Of this, 129.2 million tons of dry cargo were transshipped dry (-3.7%), and 67.9 million tons of liquid cargo (+1.7%).

According to recent information released by IAA PortNews and the IPEM Institute, the cargo throughput of Russian seaports has continued to decline this year, with a 1% decrease in throughput in the third quarter of 2024 compared to the same period last year, marking the fourth consecutive quarter of year-on-year decline.
China's rapeseed imports hit record high in October
Nov. 24: China imported 843,046 tons of rapeseed in October, up from 806,870 tons in September and from 34,439 metric tons in October last year, a record high, customs data showed.
According to the Far East Railway Telegram channel, from January to November 2024, the cargo shipment volume of the Far East Railway (FER) reached nearly 70 million tons, an increase of 2.6% compared to the same period last year.
