By the end of 2024, Russia's share in the global sunflower oil trade was 38%, and by the end of this year it is likely to grow to 42%. Such estimates are contained in the materials of the federal center "Agroexport", presented during the 5th Fat and Oil Conference.
Russia ranks second in the world in terms of sunflower oil exports. This is the main export product of the fat and oil industry — it accounts for 74% of the export volume of vegetable oils, said Ilya Ilyushin, head of Agroexport.
In 2024, the volume of sunflower oil exports from Russia amounted to 5.9 million tons. The list of the largest buyers includes India and China, where 61% and 66% of purchases are made from Russian products. Egypt (68%), Iran (83%) and Turkey (57%) have a significant volume. The forecast for the export of sunflower oil from Russia in 2025 is 5.6 million tons.
Russian sunflower meal supplies are in second place in terms of global exports, with a 28% share. This year, it may decrease to 25%, it follows from the materials. The volume of exports from Russia of sunflower meal in 2024 is estimated at 2.9 million tons, in 2025 — 2.3 million tons.
"We also have a significant share in the sunflower meal market — more than a quarter of the total volume. The main buyers of sunflower meal are Turkey and Belarus," Igor Ilyushin specified.
Almost the entire volume of rapeseed and soybean oils produced in Russia (92% rapeseed and 73% soy) is sold abroad. According to the results of last season, these Russian products accounted for 18 and 7% of the global trade volume.
"In recent years, we have been forced to completely redirect export flows. As a result, almost 90% of our rapeseed oil exports go to China. Considering that we already account for more than half of Chinese imports, further increasing supplies there may be difficult," the head of Agroexport believes. India and Algeria account for more than half of Russia's soybean oil imports.
Ilya Ilyushin noted that an increase in the production and processing of oilseeds made it possible to increase the supply of the fat and oil industry for export: over the period from 2019 to 2024, the production of vegetable oils in Russia increased by 56% and exceeded 10 million tons.
Currently, exports are the main driver of the development of the fat and oil industry. "Over the past 5 years, the average annual growth rate of exports has exceeded the growth rate of vegetable oil and meal production. As a result, 78% of the vegetable oils produced and 29% of the meal are exported," he added.
