According to the Russian Agricultural Research Center (RUSEED) Analytical Center, Russia has already planted approximately 70% of its winter crop plan for the 2026 harvest. The total area is projected at 19.8 million hectares.
The center noted that this pace is ahead of last year: a year ago, 13.5 million hectares had been planted at this time, but nearly 5.5 million hectares were still to the planned total, with harvest and weather factors still affecting the pace of work.
Winter rapeseed led the implementation of the plan, reaching 103% of the forecast. Planted area reached 76.4 million hectares, an increase of 58,000 hectares compared to the previous year. In particular, the Central Federal District saw a 12% increase in planted area.
By crop category:
·Winter wheat remains the key crop: 12.7 million hectares have been planted, representing 72% of the forecast. This represents an increase of 744,000 hectares compared to last year.
·Winter rye is showing a downward trend: planted area stands at 426,000 hectares (75% of the forecast), 73,000 hectares less than in 2024.
·Winter barley is traditionally planted late, with only 39% (310,000 hectares) of the planned area so far. However, even here, there is a positive trend—the pace is 65,000 hectares higher than last year.
·Winter camelina remains a niche crop, with 1,700 hectares planted so far, representing approximately 8% of the planned area.
Overall, as Ruseed noted, planting is more active than last year. The next two weeks will be decisive: whether farmers can approach the 20 million hectare milestone will become clear by the end of October.
OleoScope analysts previously estimated that rapeseed processed products have been the leading exporter of oils and fats since the beginning of the year. Rapeseed oil exports reached 1.07 million tons in the reporting period (up 31% year-on-year). Over 75% were sent to China. The supply of rapeseed meal to foreign markets was 457,000 tons, an increase of 54% over the same period in 2024. China (295,000 tons) and Türkiye (52,000 tons) also became major buyers.
