In March, coal exports from major Russian ports decreased significantly, especially in the north-west of the country. According to the Institute of Energy and Finance, shipments from Ust-Luga fell by 30% year—on-year, to 2.4 million tons, and from Nakhodka and Vostochny - by 21%, to 3.7 million tons. In Murmansk, supplies remained at the level of 1.2 million tons.
The main reason is the fall in prices for thermal coal to $63-66 per ton (at least since June 2024). Only companies with their own transshipment facilities can maintain profitability, Alexander Titov, a specialist at the Institute of Energy and Finance, told Kommersant. The Russian Railways policy on combating empty wagons creates additional difficulties, he added.
Some companies, including Russian Coal and CPC, plan to suspend sea exports in April due to low profitability. The domestic market remains profitable.
Experts attribute the decline in demand to seasonality, an increase in the share of renewable energy in Europe and a reduction in steel production in China. An increase in traffic to the east is impossible due to the congestion of the destinations.
