Russian coal production in the first three quarters of 2024 fell by 1.7% year on year

From January to September in 2024, Russia's coal production totaled 310 million tons, down 1.7% compared to the same period of the previous year, According to the latest industrial production statistics monthly report released by the Russian Federal Bureau of Statistics (Росстата) on October 23.
Of the coal production in the first nine months, coking coal production was 83 million tons, up 8.4% from the same period of the previous year; other bituminous coal (non-coking bituminous coal) production was 143 million tons, down 7.2% year-on-year; anthracite production was 15.8 million tons, down 18.2% year-on-year; and lignite production was 68.4 million tons, up 4.4% year-on-year.

In September, Russian coal production was 35 million tons, down 0.7% year-on-year and up 8.1% from a year earlier. Among them, coking coal production was 9.1 million tons, up 7.1% year-on-year and 1.0% month-on-month; other bituminous coal production was 16 million tons, down 10.7% year on year, up 8.8% month on month;; anthracite production was 1.8 million tons, down 8.5% year on year and up 18.2% month on month; and lignite production was 8.3 million tons, up 16.3% year on year and up 13.3% month on month.
Kuzbass Basin coal output down 8.1% year on year in first three quarters.
According to data released by Russia's Ministry of Coal Industry of Kuzbass, coal production in the Kuzbass Basin totaled 147.3 million tons in January-September 2024, a decrease of 12.9 million tons from the same period of the previous year, or a year-on-year decline of 8.1%.
