Russian coal production down 0.7 percent year-on-year in first half of 2024

According to the latest monthly report on industrial production statistics released by the Russian Federal Bureau of statistics (Росстата) on July 25, Russia's coal and lignite production totaled 0.211 billion tons from January to June 2024, down 0.7 percent from the same period last year.
Among Russia's coal production in the first half of the year, coking coal production was 56.2 million tons, an increase of 9.2 percent over the same period last year; other bituminous coal (non-coking bituminous coal) production was 97.9 million tons, down 4.3 percent from the same period last year; anthracite production was 11 million tons, down 21.3 percent from the same period last year; and lignite production was 46.3 million tons, up 2.2 percent from the same period last year.

Russian coal and lignite production was 32 million tons in June, down 3.7 percent from a year earlier and down 9.7 percent from a year earlier. Among them, coking coal production was 8.9 million tons, up 3.7 percent year-on-year and down 6.0 percent month-on-month; other bituminous coal production was 15.4 million tons, down 7.4 percent year-on-year and down 8.9 percent month-on-month; anthracite production was 1.5 million tons, down 36.6 percent year-on-year and down 19.7 percent month-on-month; lignite production was 6.4 million tons, up 8.6 percent year-on-year and down 14.0 percent month.
Kpler: Russian seaborne coal exports fell 16.6 percent year-on-year in January-June
Kepler (Kpler) ship tracking data show that in June 2024, Russia's seaborne coal exports were 13.9785 million tons, down 3.1 percent month-on-month and 13.9 percent year-on-year.
From January to June, Russia's seaborne coal exports totaled 79.1838 million tons, down 16.6 percent year-on-year. Among them, 30.9243 million tons were exported to China, down 25.6 percent year-on-year, accounting for 39 percent of its total exports.
According to information released by the Russian analysis agency CCA Analytics, from January to June 2024, Russia's total coal exports fell to 99 million tons, a decrease of 9.6 million tons from the same period last year and a year-on-year decrease of 8.8 percent.
